  • Playset, Day 1

After my failed attempt at Skydiving, I spent about 3 hours working on the kids new playset.

And after 3 hours, I only have a few more pieces to go!

  • A Beautiful Day to Fly, But…

    … a bit too windy.

Everything was looking great on the way out today, and our small group was excited. Just walking into the hanger I felt exhilarated and felt like this might be a place i start seeing on a regular basis.

We walked up the counter and filled up what must have been 20 sheets of paper (front and back) and signed and initialed everything. We were then escorted to a classroom where we spent all of 10 minutes learning what we needed to know for our jump. It started with a 25 year old video telling us about all of the dangers of doing a skydive, and to realize that while every safety measure is taken, there are no guarantees. The last part of the class was a brief overview of what would happen next, what the gear looks like, and other details on what to expect.

We were the second group to go up, but it was around that time (about 30 minites after getting there) that we were told the winds had passed the 25mph cut-off. We waited around for almost 2 hours but then decided to call it a day since conditions were only getting worse.

We will try again next week, either Friday or the following Monday!

  • A Fading Relic

The Ford/Wyoming Drive-In opened in 1950 in the heyday of drive-in movie theaters. At it’s peak in 1958, there were around 4000 drive-in’s in the US, many with multiple screens. Today there are less than 400 left in operation. The Ford/Wyoming Theater (renamed just “The Ford” in 2010 after closing the extra screens 6-9 on Wyoming) is one of them.

Knowing that drive-ins are not long for this world, the last time I was in Detroit I decided, on a whim, to pull the family van over (with the family all inside) and run out with my camera to take some photos. it seemed like a great photographic opportunity since it was a nice summer evening with the sun about to set.

The rest of the photos can be found on SmugMug.

  • Coming Soon to a Backyard in Wheaton

Thanks to a generous donation from Grandma and Grandpa Tomchak, a new playground set will be arriving soon at the Tomchak household. And I’m sure, it will only take a few minutes for dad to setup!
