Christmas In October! Thank You Aunt Shirley!

A few weeks ago the kids received a surprise from the mail man. Left on the porch was a box of joy, from none other than Santa Aunt Shirley.

It took us about a week to finally open the box (we knew we would need to set some serious time aside when they could indulge) but once it started they were all so excited.

And the occasion? Just because. Just because she wanted to do something nice for the kids. Those are always the best surprises.

Brenda decided to record and edit a short thank you video, and to the end of that I added a brief interview with Andrew where he discusses the various new Skylander characters.

We love you Aunt Shirley! Thank you so much from all of us.

We are always trying new things to help Max progress and catch up what’s considered age appropriate. One of the areas I personally feel he needs the most help is with his speech. It’s pretty clear when you talk to him that he doesn’t master the English language at the same level that his twin Andrew does.

One thing that was recommended to us by his doctor in California, Doctor Goldberg, was Rosetta Stone. I like a lot of people are familiar with it as a software program that teaches you a new language. But it never occurred to me that you could use it to learn your primary language.

Because it’s very visual and interactive, it turns out to be a natural for kids. And because it’s also something you do on the computer, while wearing a super cool headphone/microphone setup, Max really looks forward to doing it.

We spend about 20 minutes a night most nights (nights that i’m not exhausted, late getting home and that he’s not crabby) and I can see improvements in him almost day to day. Certainly over the course of a week. It occurred to me recently that maybe I should start recording them just for a record of how far he has come. So, this is the first of those recordings. It’s the cut-down version of what was originally 35 minutes long.

It was a bit of a test for me to figure out how to get all of the different sources, and it turned out that the voice he hears in the headphones was not something I captured successfully. So, as you watch it may be a bit hard to follow since you’re not hearing the voice prompts. But I expect to have this fixed for any future recordings.

If nothing else, it’s fun to watch because he’s so darn cute.

Sydney’s First Stage Performance – Kensington Schools 2013

    2013-1030_feature

Sydney had her very first on-stage performance this week. Tuesday was her “Fall Program” at Kensington Schools in Wheaton.

While all parents are certainly biased toward their own kids, I can say with confidence that she was the best singer, best performer and loudest person on stage bar none! I was so so proud of her. She showed nothing but confidence and pride and was so excited to see Max and Andrew sitting in the second row right in front of her on the stage.

    I love my baby girl!

On Tuesday I was fortunate to be part of a Breast Cancer Awareness event at Halas Hall, the Chicago Bears Training Camp in Lake Forest IL.

The event was called  P&G Best Defense Day of Action.

I was there to edit together a b-roll package of the days events for the local news channels to use on the evening news that same day.

Basically there was a camera crew running around all day shooting what was going on (some of it was not for the b-roll package, but for internal use later) and about every hour or so I would grab the P2 card from them and copy over the footage. I was editing the footage just after it was shot, with the goal to have everything done and out the door by 6pm.

Before I got going I had some time to walk around and take some photos. While I’m not much of a sports fan, it was exciting being there.

There are a few more photos on SmugMug. All of the photos were taken with my iPhone since it didn’t occur to me to bring my 5D. As they say, the best camera for the job is the one you have with you!

    Editing In Chicago Today

I’m Editing on-site in Chicago today, and tomorrow in Forrest Park. It’s always great coming to the city especially on a nice day.

What is amazing to me is how much the edit system itself has changed over the years.

Back in 2004, this is what my edit system looked like in Hong Kong. So not only was it a lot of gear, but it was taken half way around the globe.

And today, almost 10 years later, this is what it looks like.

Instead of 4-5 cases ranging from 70-110 lbs, I have a single case that weighs about 30 lbs. And it does everything the old system did and more, but it also does it faster.
