There are so many things I was better at before having kids. One of them was finishing what I started on-time.

I started editing this video for Sydney the day after her birthday, back in late November (her Birthday was Thanksgiving Day this year). But OMG I thought I would never finish.

First, I decided to force myself to edit it using FCPx, because I’ve been curious about the recent features they’ve added. That alone added a lot of time to the process. Not because FCPx is bad… it’s actually perfect for these types of videos. But because I was learning along the way. At times I would hit a wall on something and have to stop to watch a tutorial on Lynda.com about the thing or two I was having issues with.

There was the lack of a lot of free time, especially around the holidays.

And, I kept raising the bar on what I planned on doing. It went from a simple cuts only stringer of the best of what I shot to a multi-segment music video of sorts.

In the end I was pretty happy with it, but if I had not already spent so much time on it I would spend another few hours cleaning it up more. But, sometimes you have to just draw the line and call it DONE!

So here it is,  Syndey’s 5th Birthday celebration video. It had its family premiere night tonight and the kids all had some good belly laughs.

Seems like the Wizard of Oz is inescapable this year for me!  Sydney was the tornado this year. It’s not a leading part but she gave it all she had!

I’m so proud of all of our kids, and I especially admire how confident they are in themselves. I don’t remember being as outgoing as our kids are when I was their age.

So when I was watching Andrew perform at his school it really amazed me how much he just puts himself out there.

    Awesome job Andrew!

Max has come such a long way in so many different ways.

During the winter concert of  Kindergarden Max was nervous and scared and started crying during the show. He didn’t really sing at all and looked like he just hated the whole experience. It was heartbreaking to see as his father. I was there to video tape it like I had already done for the other two but what I ended up with was so bad that I just never did anything with it.

But in contrast this year he looked to be so proud to be up there on the stage, he knew most if not all the songs and he was excited to give us a tour of his classroom when the show was over. It was such a great day for him.

We are so proud of you Maximus!!

While watching the Today Show today they had a segment on how people few themselves, and what they focused on when thinking of themselves in the world. It was interesting that they put it in the context of shooting a “selfie”. That initially put me off from even wanting to watch the segment but it ended up being pretty good. I like the way they shot and edited it too.

Anyway, I found it inspiring and a little bit touching. Maybe you will too.
